Nuff Said: The Real Story of Lil' Red
"Nuff Said:The Real Story of Lil' Red" take the classic fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood" and imagines her in a whole new light. The classic gets a modern makeover as the fairy tale is brought into the 21st century.
My creative writing story takes a different approach to the classic fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood”. In my tale, Lil’ Red is a skateboard-riding, Beethoven-listening, teenager with spunk and style all her own. She delivers goodies to some of her Granny’s Bakery customers: Mr. Swine, from the “Three Little Pigs,” and Goldie Locke, from “The Story of the Three Bears,” among others. Afterwards, on a visit to her sick grandmother, Red runs into the Big Bad Wolf, who informs her that if she doesn’t stop running goodies, her grandmother will pay for it. Red and the Wolf agree to have a rap-off to settle an old family grudge. If Red wins, the Wolf will leave her family alone; if the Wolf wins, Red will stop running goodies. They meet on the next full moon for their rap-off. Each must perform a rhyming rap based on popular fairy tales. If one rapper stumbles with a rhyme, the second rapper can “steal” the rap. To successfully steal and win, one must complete the slipped up rhyme and finish the rap.
While my story holds true to some of the original elements found in the classic tale, there are also some significant changes. Lil’ Red is a “millennial” granddaughter than in previous adaptations. My version incorporates other fairy tales as Lil’ Red makes her deliveries while avoiding the Big Bad Wolf. Finally, Granny proves not as frail as one would expect. Granny is able to hold her own in the rapping department when talking with the Wolf. There are three original raps, proving that classic fairy tales can get a 21st century face lift!
The story continues some months after the rap battle has ended. Red has since open up her own bakery coffee shop called "Red's Basket" with her granny being a part owner. Red enters a Bake-off competition held at the Swine Brother's fundraising event. The contestants must make a bite sized treat for those in attendance to try. The crowd favorites move on to the next round of competition. While competing, Red meets a Blair, a girl about her same age that is known as "Sleeping Beauty" to her family. Red helps her as well as Max, one of the seven dwarfs. Red comes to find out that Max and her Granny actually went to school in West Magic Kingdom.
Red, along with Goldie Locke and Michael O'Muff (part of the Muffin Men), advance to the final stage of the competition. Each baker is challenged to make a trio of somethings for the judges: something sweet, something, savory, and something sinful. Each baker sticks to what they are known for and deliver tasty treats for the judges. Red and her baking assistant, Cindy, decide to try and make difficult goodies for the judges to try. In each round, they feel that they are being sabotaged but lack concrete evidence as to who is behind the foul-play. This second part of "Nuff Said" delivers a bit of suspense and mystery for the readers as the continue on an adventure with Lil' Red.
